Set Up A Holiday Gift Wrapping Station »

gift wrappingGift wrapping can be a great outlet for your creativity, if you have the materials and supplies you need to work your magic.

But if it’s something you leave until the last minute, only to discover you can’t find the scissors, you’re out of tape, or you only have a small amount of curling ribbon left, it can make for an exercise in frustration and futility.

Consider setting up a gift wrapping station in your home and avoid this last-minute stress, not only during the holidays, but for any gift-giving time of year.

Holiday gift bags with handles are a quick and simple fix and come in assorted sizes that will fit everything from the smallest jewelry box to the bottle of wine you’re taking with you to your sister’s Christmas Eve dinner party.

Clear, colored or printed cellophane or cellophane bags also work nicely. Wrap around a coffee cup filled with holiday candies or a tin filled with fudge for a festive touch.

Colored tissue paper can also make any gift seem more festive. Collect several colors to use when lining gift boxes or bags, to cushion delicate items, or even inside cellophane bags. It can easily be jazzed up with holiday themed stickers, or a bit of spray-on adhesive and some sprinkled glitter.

Savvy Shopping Can Save Your Sanity »

savvy shoppingShopping can be a headache regardless of the time of year, but shopping can be a special nuisance around the holiday season if you don’t plan properly.

Avoid the stress of the last-minute shopping frenzy with some forethought and planning. After the holidays have come and gone, you’ll be glad you took the time early on to prepare and plan.

The internet has become a shopping dream come true for many. Most likely your favorite retailer has its own website and offers online shopping, and many companies offer gift wrapping or a gift card and will ship directly to your gift recipient for you.

If you’re not internet-savvy or prefer to shop via catalog, that’s also an option if you plan early enough. Be sure to request catalogs from your favorite retailers and those of your friends and family by calling their customer service lines.

Again, most catalog companies offer gift wrapping and drop shipping for your convenience. They’ll be happy to confirm shipping schedules and help you out should you need specific information about an item they offer.

Curb Your Spending By Giving The Gift Of Your Time »

giftsShopping at the last minute can not only rob you of your energy and Christmas spirit, but it can zap your bank account in the process.

If these are two Christmas holiday traditions you’d like to learn to live without, there’s good news.

With some creative thought and planning, you can give thoughtful gifts that will not only be appreciated your recipients and won’t empty your wallet at the same time.

The greatest gift you have that you can give anyone is the gift of your time. With that in mind, the first thing you should do is talk with your friends and family and reach a mutual agreement not to exchange gifts.

When you don’t have to worry about what to run out and get for one another, you can focus on spending quality time together, which is a big part of what the holiday season is all about.

For those that are on your gift list, think about what you can do to help them, such as a service you can provide to make their life a little simpler.

Tips For Trimming Your Tree »

Christmas treeAre you tired of decorating your Christmas tree the same way each and every year? Maybe it’s time to mix it up a little bit this year and try something new.

If you’re thinking about trying something different this year, great! Change is always good.

Keep the following in mind while you’re thinking about what kind of Christmas tree to get, where to place your Christmas tree in your home, and how you’d like to decorate it.

Safety should be your top priority when you’re deciding what kind of Christmas tree to get and where to place it in your home.

Live trees should never be placed near any type of heating source. If you have the option, try to cut your own tree, that way you know it is fresh! If you don’t have that option, take these steps to help determine just how fresh it is. While holding it, shake it and see just how many of its needles drop to the ground.

Take a few and bend them. If they recover and return to their original shape, it’s a pretty fresh tree. It should also have some fresh, wet sap at the bottom if it’s been cut down recently.

Luminaries Light Up your Holiday Décor »

luminariesDecorating the outside of your home for the holidays can turn into an expensive venture if you’re not careful. But it doesn’t have to be.

A popular and simple way to bring a warm glow to the outside of your home during the holidays is to decorate using luminaries along the pathways, sidewalks and driveway of your home.

Luminaries are a votive candle set inside a small decorative paper bag weighted with sand. The bags are usually colored and often perforated with designs through which the candle inside shows as bright pinpricks of light.

The custom of luminaries comes from Mexico and was practiced in New Mexico for many years before spreading throughout the United States. Luminaries derive from a similar holiday custom of the Pueblo peoples in New Mexico. On Christmas Eve they build a bonfire, called luminaries, outside each house.

Take a look around your home and decide where you want your luminaries to be located. Measure the length of that pathway or sidewalk, and then double it as you’ll want both sides of the path to be lit. Calculate how many luminaries’ bags you’ll need.
