While some people are becoming more concerned about environmental issues, one can still see the smog that encases many cities during rush-hour. Anyone who watches the news can also see that we are struggling with our energy resources. Almost everyone relates hybrid cars with less pollution and better gas mileage. Besides saving money on gas, there are a few other reasons that buying a hybrid car is such a good idea.

Why a hybrid car makes environmental sense?

One can start by looking at what the EPA has to say. Comparing a regular car to a hybrid car is quite an eye-opener. The EPA thoroughly checks vehicles to see what kind of emissions they are putting into the air, and then rates them by the results. It is no wonder that hybrid cars, SUVs and soon, minivans, are the EPA’s (Environmental Protection Agency) favorites.

The Toyota Prius hybrid, for example churns out less than half of what the gas-only Camry does of carbon dioxide. Other pollutants like nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbons are cut by two-thirds and halves with hybrid vehicles. The reason that the EPA can give hybrid cars ratings in the best category is based on their green house emissions rating.

Except for trucks, hybrid cars are ending up in the best categories again and again. It sounds great to hear that a hybrid emits so much less pollution, but when one hears that most hybrids cumulatively emit 97% less toxins than the average car, it makes one wonder how anyone can justify not driving one yet. For now, long waiting lines and high prices can appease the guilt.

Churning out fewer emissions is directly linked to the other reason that hybrid cars make sense. Mileage tests show that hybrids get between the 20s and 30s for some SUV and truck models and into the 60s for cars. The Honda Insight in automatic gets about 50 mpg and the mid-60s for the manual version. Hybrids are simply more efficient than their gas counterparts.

Although, there is debate about the degree of greenhouse effects from the use of fossil fuels, most people are unable to deny the fact that better mileage in vehicles is one of the ways to produce less of them. Not understanding the complete ramifications of unchecked toxins, does not make most people feel any better about only getting 15 or 18 mpg. Hybrid cars show that there is a way out of the gluttonous gas usage, which has us polluting the skies.

It is not just the environment of “Mother Earth” that many people are worried about. Anyone who has lived in highly congested areas, and has had to commute with their car, knows that traffic fumes can become overwhelming on some days. Even sitting behind another car in the bank drive-through is enough to make one wonder how much their lungs and blood can take.

Looking back at the EPA standards for what is an acceptable amount of carbon monoxide and methane (if any), we have to ask ourselves if we are not so wrapped up in our world that we will sit and breathe poison on a daily basis. The EPA is trying to tell us that most cars, trucks and other vehicles account for a third of America’s total air pollution.

With links to the causes of cancer and other diseases still being studied, it still seems like a good idea to not only be concerned about the effects of pollution on our outside environment, but the internal, human one as well. Hybrid cars are paving the way for vehicles which lets us keep our lifestyles, without dumping tons of toxic gasses into our bodies.

According to EPA standards, having a vehicle, which gets 25 mpg instead of 20 mpg cuts the amount of carbon dioxide being pumped into the sky by 10 tons. The Environmental Protection Agency has its fingers in every industry, and is trying to measure and relay results back to those industries, the effects they are having on the environment and all living things.

As technology gets better, the excuses for driving inefficient vehicles are becoming fewer and fewer. Although the EPA may not have all the answers yet, it does not hurt to take their information seriously. Along with their knowledge about the chemicals, which most automobiles put into the air, and the effect this has on our world and bodies, a hybrid vehicle should be considered an option by more and more people.

If you are one that loves being the first to try out new trends, then you should certainly consider looking at a hybrid vehicle. Hybrid cars are the newest in vehicle technology and one of the hottest items on the market. Hybrid cars are so popular that many manufacturers have very extensive waiting lists.

Dealers were running out of hybrid cars and couldn’t get their orders filled fast enough, so several companies even stopped all other deliveries until the dealer orders were filled. The hybrid car is the new accessory that many cannot wait to get their hands on.

Reasons why hybrid cars are the hottest thing in the automobile market right now:

Many may question why the hybrid car is the hottest thing in the automobile market right now. The fact is that there are several reasons consumers are running toward these innovative vehicles. The most popular reason people are trying out hybrid cars today are due to the great gas mileages the hybrids offer. The average hybrid can offer up to 50 mpg. This is an amazing innovation and consumers are excited about it.

Since hybrid cars use a small gasoline engine as well as an electric motor, they require much less gasoline than a conventional vehicle. When they get better mileage, they save drivers money on gasoline. It is no secret that gasoline prices have been raised to all time heights in the past few years, so this type of transportation is widely welcomed.

When the average driver spends up to $50 a week on gasoline and a hybrid owner spends no more than $20 a week, it is clear where the benefits stand.

Another reason people are so excited about hybrid vehicles is because they are environmentally friendly. They put off up to 90% fewer pollutants than a conventional gasoline powered vehicle. Drivers can feel great about driving a vehicle that has very few pollutants. Communities are offering incentives like free parking for hybrid drivers, which are only making them more popular.

Cities are realizing that by rewarding their hybrid drivers, they are showing citizens that the public condones good environmental decisions. With parking difficult to come by in large cities, this is a great reward for a hybrid driver.

Corporations are also getting in on the fact that hybrid cars are great for communities. Many large corporations, especially those located in California, are offering their employees cash toward the purchase of a new hybrid. This encouragement is really paying off and many of these large corporations have a high number of hybrid owners working for them. The corporations are also benefiting by keeping their community’s air cleaner and by gaining through public relations.

A third reason hybrid cars are popular is because they are the newest vehicle design offered. Everyone wants to have the fastest or the best vehicle and hybrid cars are the one to have right now. Celebrities, government officials, and some of the wealthiest people in the world are driving hybrid cars. They are driving them to help the environment and to make a public statement about taking care of the air we breathe. This alone is a reason many consumers will be drawn to hybrid cars.

The great thing about hybrid cars is that they don’t cost a lot more than many conventional vehicles. They are very comparable in price. Therefore, when you buy a new hybrid car, you are saving money due to the amounts of gasoline you will save.

The comparable prices are another reason hybrid cars are the happening thing right now. If you had a choice of two similarly priced cars, with one being environmentally conscious and the other being a conventional vehicle, you would likely choose the hybrid.

With celebrity endorsement, government and corporate incentives, great prices, and low mileage, it is not likely the hybrid will become a thing of the past anytime soon. They are the hottest things in the automobile market right now. With thousands rolling off the assembly lines each day, the demand is still much greater than the supply.

Manufacturers are preparing for hybrid cars to be the best choice in the market for years to come. If you are interested in a trendy car that offers the best gasoline mileage, incentives, and great prices, then you should take a close look at the new hybrid models. You might just love what you see.

Hybrid vehicles have made a huge splash on the automobile market, and look to have no intentions of slowing down. Many are mesmerized by this unique car because of its innovative and environmentally friendly composition.

Hybrid cars are composed of a standard gasoline engine in addition to an electric motor. Hybrids come in two main classes the parallel hybrid and the series hybrid. To truly understand this fast growing trend, one must delve deeper into the creation of this vehicle.

The parallel and series hybrids

Both parallel and series hybrids have the same six components a small gas engine, a fuel tank, an electric motor, generator, transmission, and batteries. What makes a hybrid different from the traditional automobile is that it utilizes two power sources, an electric motor and internal combustion engine. This engine is the final source of energy that provides power to the vehicle. The electric motor helps when more power is needed.

Hybrid cars are in demand for a number of reasons. For one, the engine is more compact and efficient than a standard automobile. Most hybrid vehicles are also lighter, and have more room than non-hybrids because they do not require the use of heavy batteries. Hybrids are also known to be extremely fuel efficient, and release far less harmful emissions than a typical car.

Presently, the parallel hybrid is the more common of the two classes. In the parallel system, a gas engine and fuel tank are connected to the transmission with the batteries and engine connected, but separately.

In simpler terms, there are two different power sources connected in parallel to the transmission. The fuel tank provides gas to the internal combustion engine and the batteries supply power to the electric motor. The engine and motor operate the transmission concurrently, as the transmission rotates the hybrid’s wheels.

When the parallel hybrid is being operated below a designated speed, the gas engine switches on as the speed transcends its limit. Several parallel designs incorporate an electrical generator and motor into a single item, with this unit taking the place of the starter motor. In most situations, the internal engine is the main point of energy, with the motor only turning on when the car needs extra power.

The series hybrid never receives direct power from the gas engine. In this class, the engine is energized by an electrical generator. Power from this generator goes into the motor that propels the vehicle, and the extra energy is used to charge the batteries. If huge quantities of power are needed, both the battery pack and generator are used for electricity.

Series hybrids are known for their efficient engines. These hybrids are perfect for those driving conditions that require several starts and stops, such as delivery. However, most series hybrids must have separate generator and motor sections; in the parallel class, these items can be combined.

Subclasses of the hybrid car

There are also four subclasses of the hybrid car, the full hybrid, the mild hybrid, the assist hybrid, and the hydraulic hybrid. A full hybrid or “strong hybrid” can operate on just the engine, just the batteries, or a combination of the two. For battery only usage, a large-sized high volume battery-pack is typically required. A benefit of the full hybrid is that they can run solely on gasoline for daily driving.

The mild hybrid is equipped with an oversized starter motor that allows the engine to be switched off whenever the car is braking or stopped, and then quickly restarted. Car accessories continue to operate on the electrical power even though the engine is turned off, and the motor is used to seize the energy.

Assist hybrids use the engine as the main source of power. These hybrids also have an electric motor connected to a somewhat traditional power train. The assist hybrid’s electric motor is in essence a large starter motor that functions when the engine is in operation, as well as when the gas pedal is utilized for extra power.

And finally, the hydraulic hybrid automobile makes use of mechanical and hydraulic sources as opposed to those of the electrical variety. The batteries are replaced by a hydraulic accumulator, while a displacement pump takes the place of the motor and generator. The hydraulic class is used mostly in large vehicles such as buses and trucks.

Gas prices all over the world have been soaring for years, giving drivers no other option than to pay the high prices. With more people driving vehicles that require more gas on a weekly basis, the rise in prices in being felt financially.

Although experts agree that the rise in gas prices are not significant enough to deter consumers from driving their big trucks and sports utility vehicles, the thrifty spender may see things differently. A popular option for those looking for a cheaper way to travel is the hybrid.

What’s a hybrid?

The “hybrid” is something of mixed origin or composition by definition. A hybrid vehicle is one that has both a gasoline engine and an electric engine in which it operates upon. The gasoline engine is often smaller than in regular vehicles, allowing the electric motor to compensate with energy. A high-voltage battery charges the electric motor when the car is parked.

Today’s hybrid cars

Today’s hybrid cars can operate using either engine or both at the same time. This efficient system is great for the environment and even better for your pocket book.

With hybrid cars running on both a gasoline engine as well as an electric motor, they do not require as much gasoline as regular vehicles. Most hybrid vehicles average around 50 mpg, which is amazing when compared to conventional gasoline engine vehicles.

The incredible gas mileage is one reason hybrid cars are being thrust to the front of the industry during the soaring gas prices. On another note, since hybrid cars burn less gasoline than most vehicles, they also emit fewer pollutants.

Studies show they are 90% cleaner than a conventional automobile. The small and efficient engines also help reduce their total exhaust emissions, making them not only financially wise choices but also environmentally wise choices.

The fact that hybrid cars have two engines that work together to get the most efficient results in vehicle, travel is the main reason why hybrids get great gas mileage. There are a few other minor reasons that also contribute however.

Most hybrid cars are being sold with low-rolling resistance tires included. These tires are named as such because they have proven to roll easily on the road. The easily rolling measurement also means that they minimize the energy used by the tire.

With the tires using less energy, they are allowing the car to be more efficient and in turn get better gas mileage. Studies have shown that hybrid cars with low-rolling resistant tires have saved drivers an average of 6% more on gasoline usage.

The average driver of a sports utility vehicle may complain of spending up to $50 a week on gasoline for their vehicle. These drivers are those they have only traveled in their own town during the week.

An average hybrid driver estimates they spend less than $20 a week in gas for their hybrid. This is due to the fact that hybrid cars get better mpg than conventional gasoline powered cars. Different models of hybrid cars will in fact get different mpg rates.

Charts show that if you own a vehicle that gets 21 mpg, you will spend an average of $8,500 a year on gasoline. If you own a hybrid car that gets 46 mpg, you will save over $4,600 a year, spending only $3,900 on gasoline.

Buying a hybrid car that gets 55 mpg or more, you will save between $500 and $1000 more a year compared to a 46mpg hybrid. These facts are enough to make conventional SUV owners want to run toward a hybrid.

If you are tired of paying way too much at the pump, then you should certainly consider an alternative form of transportation. You can choose to ride your bike, take a city bus, or carpool. The most luxurious option however is to purchase a hybrid car. There are many different models of hybrid cars offered at this time. There are many more models coming out soon.

Many hybrid models have distinct looks, while others, like the Toyota Camry Hybrid will have a typical “Camry” look. No matter what styles and models you like, there is something in a hybrid option for you. So, take a drive down to your local hybrid car lot and take one for a test drive today! You will love that you are driving a car that is great to the environment as well as easy on the pocketbook when it comes to gasoline.

On the market in the United States since 1999, the hybrid car combines a battery-assisted electric motor with a gasoline engine. These increasingly popular and extremely fuel efficient automobiles ingest less gas, while also emitting fewer pollutants than the standard auto engine.

Will the popularity of the hybrid car last? That is the question on the minds of auto makers and car aficionados alike. To determine the answer, one must consider both the pros and the cons of the hybrid car.

Advantages of a hybrid car

The hybrid car is a perfect choice for anyone concerned with environmental issues. Research shows that certain hybrid models produce 90 percent fewer dangerous pollutants than a conventional gasoline engine. This decrease in emissions is largely due to the vehicle’s design. Hybrids’ can also greatly reduce smog pollution, with the total deduction percentage towering over the national average.

Many also like the fact that hybrid vehicles combine the best of both automobile worlds. The cleaner energy of an electric motor with the sustaining long-lasting power of the gasoline engine is provided in a hybrid vehicle. This winning combination produces a car that is highly fuel efficient, and can save up to 30 miles per gallon more than a standard non-hybrid auto.

Less fuel consumption equals fewer harmful pollutants. Unfortunately, the hybrid car can never achieve total emission-free status due to their internal combustion engines.

The smaller engine of the hybrid car has proven to be far more efficient than that of a conventional vehicle. This is a big plus for many. Most standard vehicles require a large engine to supply enough power for acceleration.

However, with smaller hybrid engines, this is not the case. The efficiency in these engines can be improved by using smaller and lighter engine parts. A smaller engine does not have to use the added energy that a larger one uses in cases of extreme acceleration.

A smaller engine also makes for a more compact car, a feature that attracts many potential hybrid owners. This engine and lighter materials also make an automobile that weighs quite a bit less than your average non-hybrid vehicle.

Buy a hybrid, get a tax break. Now that can increase popularity on any car! The federal government is offering tax cuts to those who purchase hybrid cars through the year 2006.The amount of tax deduction you will receive depends on a number of factors. The tax bracket you are in, and the years you file are some things that are considered.

The government began these deductions with a one-time cut of $2,000 in 2003. In the year 2004, the average tax cut was $1,500, in 2005 the cut will be $1,000, and in the final year, 2006, the average deduction will be $500.

Disadvantages of a hybrid car:

The hybrid vehicle does come with some disadvantages. The steep price tag is the biggest complaint for most hybrid car buyers. For a hybrid car, be prepared to pay more than a conventional non-hybrid car.

Owners can save up to 50 percent on fuel, however. The high cost is mostly due to the extremely expensive battery that hybrids use for power, and the current high demand for the hybrid car. The battery is covered under the car’s warranty, but once it is expired, it is entirely up to the owner to deal with this pricey piece of equipment.

Hybrid vehicles can be rather difficult to find in some areas. In the beginning of the hybrid vehicle, car manufacturers did not want to produce the automobiles in large quantities until there was a large demand. Most consumers do not want to buy an automobile until they see them, and that is what generally generates demand.

So, it takes awhile for new cars to debut on the market. With the popularity of the hybrid car increasing at a steady rate, many waiting lists have been created for various makes and models of this now favored car. Some lists range anywhere from two to eight months. As the production of these vehicles increase, so will their appearance at car dealerships across the country.

Hybrid cars seem like a new innovation to many consumers. They are trendy and economical, which is making them hot on the market. The truth is however hybrids have in fact been around for a long time. They were not always called hybrids. Many were simply referred to as cars powered by both electric and gasoline. With rising prices of gasoline and oil, and the shift in focus on pollution, car manufacturers are beginning to give the old electric and gasoline car system another glance.

First thought of a hybrid car

The first thought of a hybrid car came from H. Piper in 1905.Piper applied for a patent for something he called a vehicular power train, which was essentially an electric motor that would augment a gasoline engine. Not only did his invention use both electric and gasoline, but it also allowed vehicles to go from zero to 25 mph in ten seconds, which was almost four times faster than other cars went at this time. The invention was genius, but the timing was terrible.

For at least two years after Piper’s invention, there was a fast paced market for gasoline engines. The availability and cost of the gasoline engine made it a popular option. Fuel was easy to transport and cheap, therefore helping the gasoline engine market drive. With even basic electricity available to only the wealthiest citizens, the electric and gasoline engine never really took off.

Other manufacturers began to build their versions of hybrid cars as well. The Paris Electric Car Company built several cars that included a model that ran on alcohol. Jacob Lohner & Co, from Austria, built a system where the electric motors were the same as the wheel hubs, which allowed power to be delivered directly to the wheels.

General Electric got into the game around 1900, building a hybrid car with a four-cylinder gasoline engine. A handful of companies built different models of their own hybrids up until 1940.

With many of these versions getting only around 20 miles on the battery alone, consumers were still not sold on the idea. They could get much more use out of a totally gasoline engine and gasoline costs were still reasonable enough to provide them with what they wanted. Hybrid cars were not popular still, however trains manufacturers began looking at the engine designs. Many decided to begin using diesel-electric hybrid power trains, and continue to do so today.

In 1997, the world finally seemed ready for a full production hybrid car, and the Toyota Prius went on sale in Japan. It was a hit and has continued to be the most popular of the hybrid models to date, and is sold in over 20 countries.

The first Prius sold in the United States did not need to be plugged up due to a separate generator to keep the battery charged. It was an efficient model and got about 52 mpg. The great thing is that it could operate on gas alone, electric alone, or both.

Other companies took note of the success of the Prius and began coming out with their own models. The Honda Insight is another popular hybrid model that was introduced in the United States in 2000. Honda is also now offering a hybrid Accord. Toyota continues to bring new hybrid models to the table, with plans to bring a midsize sport utility hybrid to the market soon. General Motors and Chevrolet are also trying to work into the market, with success.

Consumers who purchase hybrids are being met with more applause than most other car buyers. Not only are hybrid owners getting better gas mileage than most, they are also enjoying incentives. These incentives are coming in the form of cash from their employers, discounts from corporations, and free parking from various cities.

Hybrid car owners are being treated like celebrities on a certain level. They are praised for their responsible driving actions and their commitment to promoting eco-friendly behavior.

It took years for the hybrid plan to work out and become a hit with consumers. When it was first invented, the timing of the world was not right for the idea. Today however, with gas prices soaring and the fear of depletion of our natural resources, it is more important for us to think of alternatives to the gasoline engine. Therefore, hybrid cars today are much more successful than they were in the early 1900’s.

Consumers are more intelligent than ever. They do their research and investigate their options before making a purchase. It is uncommon for a consumer to rush out and buy the first thing they see available.

The same is true with vehicle purchases. The future in vehicle purchases is changing however, with the massive introduction of the hybrid car.

Hybrid cars

The hybrid is a vehicle that has both a gasoline engine and an electric motor. The gasoline motor and the electric motor work together. Together they help the wheels of the vehicle move. It is an interesting exchange, with the gasoline motor instantly shutting off when the car is not in motion.

Although it seems that the driver would notice this process, it goes undetected by the driver. The motors are virtually silent, disallowing the driver to be aware of what exactly is taking place under the hood. By using the energy supplied by the electric motor, the car uses less fuel than a normal car model. Along with the lower fuel usage, the hybrid vehicle also emits less pollution.

The best thing about it is that hybrid cars are not much more expensive than the regular models. Overall, with savings in gasoline, hybrid owners will make up any cost difference quickly. Some corporations are offering cash toward the purchase of a hybrid car for their employees.

Cities are also offering incentives, such as free parking and tax benefits. If you include incentives offered, they can even cost less than regular models from the beginning.

This new vehicle option is making huge progress in a market that is dominated mostly by trucks and sports utility vehicles. Although trucks are still expected to lead the vehicle market, hybrid cars are expected to jump from being 0.5 percent of the market to being 3.5 percent in the next few years. This is a huge expectation that will likely be realized.

One thing that is helping the hybrid come along in sales is legislation regarding the hybrid.

States like California are trying to pass as many laws as they can to aid hybrid owners or potential hybrid owners. Along with free parking they are looking into passing laws that prohibits the use of diesel and other pollutants, making the hybrid a lovely option for buyers.

The more they can do to make the hybrid look wonderful, the better overall sales will be.

The federal government has even offered a one-time tax deduction for hybrid owners who purchase their car before the end of 2005. Although there are some requirements you must meet for this deduction, the law is a huge step toward a more eco-friendly government.

The hybrid car is the perfect option for citizens who would like to do more for the environment but cannot toss their vehicle aside completely. Although many citizens would love to travel by bicycle alone, it is not feasible for many. Those with children cannot possible travel by bicycle in the winter and rain. Therefore, the hybrid car is creating an option for these citizens.

Consumers can feel great about purchasing a hybrid car because they know they are doing something positive for the environment. With concerns like global warming coming to the forefront, everyone should be doing their part.

First hybrid cars

The first hybrid cars introduced were rather small, leaving a lot of room for more designs to be presented. The hybrid cars were such a huge success that there are still waiting lists for these models.

With the success of the hybrid cars, manufacturers are deciding to come out with larger models that get close to the same mpg as well as emit low emissions.

Full sized trucks and sports utility vehicles are coming onto the scene with great expectation. There is not a single manufacturer that is leaving the hybrid to the others. Everyone is getting their designs out and approved. There will likely be at least four or five new hybrid models introduced in the next few years.

With the public being more aware of environmental issues, it is not a surprise that hybrid cars are so popular. Manufacturers are making the public aware of what hybrid cars do as well as their many advantages.

Responsible citizens are flocking to the new futuristic designs. With great incentives being offered as well as the fact that hybrid cars save consumers money, there is no question of where this trend is heading.

With a compact, yet highly efficient engine, the hybrid car is becoming increasingly popular for its numerous advantages. One such benefit is the car’s knack for fuel efficiency. As gas prices continue to fluctuate, car owners are searching for ways to maximize fuel reserves to the fullest.

While every automobile is capable of achieving better gas mileage, there are certain tips and tricks for the hybrid that can assist in your conservation efforts.

Tips to maximize your hybrid’s fuel efficiency:

1. Periodically turn off the engine

A hybrid car has an alternate power supply that consists of batteries and an electric motor. For this reason, the hybrid does not have to use the gasoline engine at all times, and can turn off this engine occasionally. An opportune occasion to switch off the gasoline engine is while stopped at a traffic light.

2. Minimize air-conditioning usage

Studies have revealed that use of air-conditioning systems in hot temperatures can raise fuel consumption by at least 20 percent. Fuel efficiency can be improved in the summer months by minimizing air-conditioning usage, and utilizing the hybrid car’s flow-through ventilation system.

It is also wise to make use of air vents to circulate cool air as much as possible. This is especially helpful with highway driving. If air-conditioning usage is a necessity, set the controls to a moderate level, and then switch the system off after the automobile has cooled.

3. Low-rolling resistance tires are crucial

The standard automobile is equipped with tires that are designed to supply proper traction and a smooth, comfortable driving experience. However, because of a large amount of drag, most automobile tires do not provide the highest quality of fuel efficiency.

The hybrid is designed with a unique variety of tire that is sturdier and inflated to a higher air pressure than the traditional automobile tire. This causes less drag, and better gas mileage.

4. Regularly check tire pressure

Research has shown that gas mileage can improve by approximately 3.5 percent if tires are correctly inflated. Some hybrid owners choose to go slightly beyond the recommended air pressure amount, while still staying below the maximum pressure range.

Over inflation can cause rough tire wear and handling difficulties. Tire pressure should be gauged on a routine basis, checking for leaks or proof of embedded objects. Wintertime especially calls for regular inspections, as cold weather can cause a sharp decline in air pressure.

5. Properly maintain both car and engine

Keeping your hybrid in quality condition not only minimizes fuel and money costs, it reduces the threat of dangerous emissions. Dirty oil, clogged air filters, and overall neglect to other general hybrid maintenance can contribute to a decrease in fuel efficiency.

Replacing clogged air filters can increase a hybrid’s fuel efficiency by almost 10 percent, while also shielding the engine from impurities. A routine tune-up when the car is not working properly or has not passed an emissions test has been known to greatly improve gas mileage. Spark plugs should also be correctly maintained; make sure they are firing properly, and replace them when necessary.

6. Combine errands and trips

Combining errands and short trips together is an easy way to maximize your hybrid’s fuel efficiency. Numerous short trips that begin from a cold engine generate two times as much fuel as a longer trip covering the same exact region when the engine is already warm. Linking errands together in a similar part of town saves both time and money. This method also cuts down on the wear of your hybrid. Try car pools when possible, or share driving responsibilities with others.

7. Drive slower

Most drivers tend to drive 5 to 10 miles over the posted speed limit. However, keeping within the limit can have a considerable impact on the fuel efficiency of a hybrid car. Why? The aerodynamic drag on some cars increases dramatically the faster it is driven. The higher the speed, the less fuel efficient the car will be.

8. Drive gently

Destructive driving habits, such as rapid acceleration and hard braking, unnecessarily wastes fuel. These harmful driving practices lower the gas mileage of your hybrid by more than 30 percent. Think about using overdrive gears on the interstate to decrease engine speed and reduce fuel usage.

9. Keep a constant speed

Speeding your hybrid up uses energy, parts of which are depleted when the car slows down again. Keeping a constant speed assists in improving fuel efficiency. Utilizing cruise control on the interstate can help in greatly in fuel efficiency, and usually reduces funds spent on gas.

10. A fuel consumption gauge is a must

A fuel consumption gauge display shows how your driving affects your car’s fuel efficiency. Numerous cars are equipped with these gauges, however if your hybrid is not, you can buy one that plugs into your car. There are a variety of gauge displays now available for purchase.

Most consumers have heard of hybrid vehicles, but many of them could not explain the definition. The actual definition of the word “hybrid” is stated as something of mixed origin or composition. This definition fits today’s hybrid vehicles perfectly.

A hybrid car is a vehicle that has both a gasoline engine and an electric motor. The gasoline engine is often smaller than in regular vehicles, allowing the electric motor to compensate with energy.

A high-voltage battery charges the electric motor. Although older hybrid cars need to be “plugged up” when not in use, newer hybrid cars recharge themselves when not in use.

Interesting things about a hybrid car:

The interesting thing about a hybrid vehicle is that they can often work on just one of the energy resources; the gasoline engine or the electric motor. Most drivers operate their hybrid using both resources however, even though they may not know it.

You will be unaware of what happens under the hood, while you drive a hybrid car. The car will primarily operate off of power from the gasoline engine. However, when the electric motor is needed, it will take over. The gasoline engine conserves energy by instantly shutting off when the vehicle is stopped.

For example, when the vehicle is at a stop light, the gasoline engine will kick off until the gas pedal is pushed again. The radio, lights, and all other components however will stay consistent due to the battery. Although not all hybrids work in this manner, many do.

There have been a few problems with the design of the stopped engine. Since the gasoline engine cuts off and on, it is usually virtually silent. This can confuse a driver or emergency worker. They may think the car is off, when it is actually on.

Therefore, there have been improvements in this area, including the addition of an indicator light near the speedometer of most models. This light will tell the driver or a worker that the car is still on. Some manufacturers still suggest chocking the wheels of your hybrid when it is parked to avoid any accidents.

It is no secret that gasoline prices are soaring in the world today. Many drivers complain of increasing prices. Since hybrid cars run on both a gasoline engine as well as an electric motor, they do not require as much gasoline as regular vehicles. The average miles per gallon a hybrid car will obtain is 50. This is making them very popular with consumers.

In turn, since hybrid cars burn less gasoline than most vehicles, they also emit fewer pollutants. They have shown to be up to 90% cleaner than a conventional automobile. The small and efficient engines also help reduce their total exhaust emissions. Hybrid cars are extremely environmentally friendly.

Hybrid cars have several features that make them much different than conventional cars. The construction of hybrid cars is one place in which they differ. Some of today’s hybrid cars are made of aluminum and plastic.

The lightweight design makes the hybrid cars able to be powered easily. It may seem that these vehicles would offer less protection than a conventional car, but studies have shown they are safe. The manufacturers can create stability by using panels in various shapes to reinforce the design.

Two of the major manufacturers of hybrid cars are Honda Motors and Toyota Motor Corporation. They brought the hybrid to the United States around 2000.They originally brought the Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius to the country, with great success.

Now, many other manufacturers are getting into hybrid manufacturing. There are plans for sport utility models as well as full size truck models. With consumers flocking to hybrid designs, there is no doubt all manufacturers will be trying to design the best models.

The hybrid vehicle is something that has been well-accepted around the world in the last few years. With concerns like global warming, it is welcoming to have eco-friendly options available for today’s consumers. Employers and city governments are beginning to take note as well, offering employee incentives as well as free city parking.

The fact is that these vehicles save the consumer money on gasoline and help keep the environment safe. Buying a new hybrid vehicle is a positive situation for everyone involved.

Hybrid cars are one of the most popular options in transportation today. Consumers are flocking to these vehicles for many reasons. One of the most popular reasons consumers love hybrid cars is because they save them hundreds of dollars a year in gasoline purchases.

Hybrid cars are not only easy on the pocketbook, but also extremely easy on the environment. These environmental advantages are getting the attention of government and corporations as well. With more hybrid models coming out each year, it is no shock that this innovative vehicle design is moving to the top of the sales chain.

Freshest news in hybrid car happenings

Some of the freshest news in hybrid happens involves legislation. Many states and cities are becoming more aware of the environmental advantages hybrids offer for their communities. Just by driving a hybrid car, the average citizen is cutting their transportation pollution output by up to 90%.

If every citizen made the transition to the hybrid car, there would be much less air pollution in an area. Therefore, the government is beginning to offer incentives for hybrid owners.

In some areas, hybrid car owners are enjoying perks for their local government already. In large cities like Los Angeles, hybrid owners can park at any city parking meter for free. Various cities in New Mexico and Connecticut are also offering free city parking for hybrid owners. Even cities that have not offered free parking are offering parking discounts.

Students, professors, and staff at the University of Miami enjoy a 50% reduction in their parking fees for driving a hybrid vehicle. Many of these locations only authorize certain hybrid cars however, based on their total emissions. If you drive a hybrid, you may want to investigate your community’s incentives.

By offering incentives, community governments can encourage consumers to make wise environmental decisions. Although it is unlikely these incentives will completely influence a car buyer to get a hybrid, they will often help a car buyer who is “on the fence” choose a hybrid for their purchase. Showing the citizens of the community that the government is committed to rewarding those who contribute is a great way to help the hybrid trend.

Corporations that care about their communities are also getting in on the incentive deals. Many, especially in the state of California, are offering cash toward the purchase of a hybrid car for all full time employees. Some corporations will only approve specific hybrid models and others have a limit on how many employees can take advantage of the cash each year.

However, as a whole, this incentive is working great. There are many reasons a corporation can benefit from offering this type of incentive, however at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is that the incentive is helping the environment.

Since sales of hybrid cars are soaring, there will be many new hybrid models coming to consumers in the next few years. Most of the hybrid cars on the market thus far have been cars. For the 2006 model year however, there will be four new sport utility vehicles offered.

The Lexus RX 400h, the Mazda Tribute, the Mercury Mariner, and the Toyota Highlander are all going to be available. All of the models are only available with automatic transmissions. The Ford Escape that was introduced for the 2005 model year is doing so well that manufacturers are optimistic about these new designs. Obviously, these designs won’t get as many mpg as a hybrid car will, but they are still very eco-friendly.

At least twelve more hybrid models are expected by the end of 2008. These models will include a Toyota Camry Hybrid, a Nissan Altima Hybrid, a Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Tahoe, and a GMC Yukon Hybrid. With something that appeals to everyone coming out, there is an expected increase in the sales of hybrids. Consumers are going to be choosing models that they already love and getting the perks of driving a hybrid.

With the government, businesses, and manufacturers focusing on hybrid models and incentives for hybrids, there should be a continued trend involving hybrids. Consumers will take advantage of these incentives and feel great about doing their part to help the environment. With lifestyles that make driving cars almost necessary, these hybrids are offering a peaceful alternative for vehicle drivers everywhere.
