In its original, rough form, diamond is highly unremarkable. It appears to be like an ordinary stone that is recovered from secondary deposits.
It is dull in appearance, with external surfaces that seem to be battered with its opaque covering. With this appearance, the so-called “diamond cuts” was considered.
Diamond cuts are in the first place very important to the beauty of the gemstone. It is through it that the hidden beauty of diamond is brought in a dramatic fashion.
It is actually the act of polishing and creating flat facets in the face of the diamond to create an appearance that will catch every eye.
Well, diamond cutting is highly considered knowing that even a diamond with an outstanding clarity and color will not display the sparkle that diamonds are known for if it is not well-cut or if its components don’t interact with light the way they should.
It is for this reason that diamond cuts have been deemed as the most important in the diamond 4 Cs (carats, clarity, color and cut).

The purpose of the diamond cut is to exploit the excellent material properties of the diamond. Over the past centuries numerous diamond cut had been developed.
Every angle and length every cut of a diamond is intended in order to reflect the maximum quantity of light that will pass through the diamond. Numerous procedures of cutting diamonds have been developed over the past few centuries.
The greatest accomplishment with regards to cutting diamonds was made by a gem aficionado and mathematician named “Marcel Tolkowsky”.
Marcel Tolkowsky developed a certain technique in cutting diamonds called “round brilliant cut”. The round brilliant cut is done by analyzing or calculating just the right shape to return and scatter light when the diamond is observed from above.
Nowadays, the modern round brilliant cut has a total number of 57 facets (a facet is the polished faces of a diamond); 33 facets on the top half or crown and 24 on the lower half also called the pavilion.
That light that passes through the diamond is diffused by the crown while the pavilion reflects the light back through the top of the diamond.

The term “diamond clarity” is used by the jewelers and gemologists to refer to how flawless and how flawed the diamond is.
It simply relates to the presence and absence of flaws in the gemstone and is considered by many as one of the most common indicators of the diamond’s quality.
Diamond clarity is on the most basic one of the four Cs of diamond grading, with the others being carat, color, and cut. It is commonly identified by either the inclusions or the blemishes, which are but two of the common ways of identifying how flawless the diamond is.
The inclusions, on one hand, are flaws that occur inside the gemstone. They seem to appear like fingerprints and when they occur, they tend to make the diamond clarity less brilliant for the reason that internal flaws will interfere with light as it passes through the stone.
There are also some forms of inclusions that can make the gemstone susceptible to breaking. The most common forms of inclusions are the following:
- Clouds
- Feathers
- Crystals or minerals
- Knots
- Cavities
- Cleavage
- Bearding
- Internal graining
