Presentation is everything when it comes to food. One wants to achieve an appetizing look with their culinary masterpiece so taste will be discovered and the best way to accomplish this to prepare trifles on the table.

Trifles are Britain’s creative and delicious gift to the world of desserts. The dessert is a thick solidified mix of sponge cake, fruits, custard, fruit juices or alcohol, and whipped cream layered in a transparent bowl revealing a bright colorful array of the mixed ingredients.

In fact, a well-done trifle partly serves as a decorative table centerpiece of families during holidays particularly Christmas, where the delighting colors of red, white, and yellow trifle dessert makes a complementing fit.

Trifles are also called as Punch Bowl Cakes since transparent punch bowls are often used in layering the dessert.

One can have the freedom on how to go about the layering of ingredients but traditionally the cake such as lady fingers or sponge cake composes the first layer, a jam spread could go on top of the cake to compose the very thin second layer.

Sprinkling sherry and allowing the liquid to soak in is the next step then cuts of fresh fruits such as strawberries or peaches will compose the third layer, which will be over laid with a creamy layer like a custard then finally whipped cream.

The layering repeats from putting on the cake again until the last whipped cream layer reaches the totally filled level of the bowl. Finally, the dessert is frozen or refrigerated before serving.

Today, trifles evolved with the times using about any sweet items that would satisfy one’s taste and creative whims. The cake layer, for instance, could be substituted with brownies.

Instead of sherry, fruit juices or flavored wine are preferred and other layers could now consist of crushed candies, nuts, or crumbled cookies. The dessert has become a venue to express one’s creativity in experimenting ingredients that would give a colorful and appetizing texture.

From Britain the dessert gained prominence in other countries, which created their own versions of the trifle desert. Russia, for instance, has its Creole Trifle, which almost the same with the original trifle only that special rhum or red wine is used to moisten the cake layer.

New Orleans, on the other hand, uses leftover or imperfect baked goods as part of the ingredients. Trifles not only give a cool delightful treat for your taste buds but a festive sight for the eyes as well.

One of the yummiest treats ever created in the world of desserts is the ice cream sundae. Sweet, creamy, and refreshing, sundaes are truly the coolest treat one can have. The irresistible ice cream treat, however, is not limited from being a cold saccharine for the mouth but a symbol of true American culinary creativity.

Sundaes normally consist of a scoop of ice cream covered with sweet thick syrup such as chocolate, strawberry, caramel and butterscotch, and sometimes topped with whipped cream, chopped peanuts, sliced fruits, or cherries.

Originating from classic American diners, sundaes are now served almost everywhere from plush hotel restaurants, dessert joints, fast food chains, and even at home not just in America but around the globe.

American historians say around the late 1800s sundaes served as the alternative indulgence to the sinful ice cream sodas, which were prohibited to be served during Sundays or the holy Sabbath day.

Since served every Sunday the ice cream treat was called the sundae. As time went on, the sweet syrup covered ice cream is no longer served only on Sundays and became an all-time everyday treat.

Sundaes are undisputedly an American creation. No particular city, however, has been established as the birthplace of the dessert. Many claims have been made to the origin of the first sundae but the rivaling claims of Ithaca of New York and Two Rivers in Wisconsin are the most popular.

Two Rivers claims that the ice cream sundae was born in their town as early as 1881. One Sunday of that year, a certain customer named George Halluer asked ice cream parlor owner Edward Berner for an ice cream soda.

Reminded that it can’t be served during Sabbath but having a strong craving at the same time, Halluer asked Berner for a scoop of ice cream but with chocolate syrup on top instead. Berner later offered to other customers the concoction, which became a best-selling item in his parlor.

Ithaca, on the other hand, made a bit late claim starting with the year 1892 when another soda parlor owner Chester C. Platt served one hot Sunday afternoon a cold treat for Unitarian Church pastor John M. Scott.

The treat was made of a plain vanilla ice cream poured with cherry syrup and topped with candied cherry, which was later called the Cherry Sunday. The new specialty treat was advertised on a local newspaper enticing other people to try it at 10 cents.

Other more claims from Illinois, Louisiana and Ohio have also been made. No particular story, however, could consensually settle the authenticity of the claim worthy for the real origin of the dessert. Despite the lack of a particular town or city of birthplace, sundaes remain a true American pride.

Summer sun still bears something delightfully fruitful for everyone despite its pricking heat. It is literally fruitful in the sense that the hot season brings a bounty of different fruit varieties such watermelons, blueberries, and peaches among others.

Sucking into the fresh soft meat of the fruit is such a refreshing experience in wetting out sun-dried mouth. But for the creative few, wonderfully eating the fruit alone is not enough.

Some would fancy dressing up the fruits and creating something special out of it making the sunny days a season for summer fruit desserts.

Summer fruit desserts could range to any chilly sweet concoctions that use any fresh fruit varieties complemented or mixed with frozen and other sumptuous ingredients.

Almost every summer you witness juicy watery fruits being concocted with crushed ice, ice cream, yogurt and other cooling stuff and added with chocolates and cookies as well to come up with a more creative and cooler way of beating the heat.

Refreshing summer fruit desserts are actually quick and easy to prepare. One can create it even with the absence of fire.

Preparing a summer fruit dessert can even be done with the kids as simple mixing and stirring is needed to do it.But proper preparation is still required to come up with a deliciously light, sweet, and healthy treat.

When having ice cream on the summer fruit dessert, for instance, it is recommended to have it stand at room temperature for 20 minutes before scooping it out to ensure serving a perfectly chilled ice cream texture.

The same applies to the summer fruit desserts that have been chilled for a long time in the freezer. This allows the dessert to slightly soften so everyone can really taste the sweet flavor of its ingredients.

Serving your concocted summer fruit dessert in a fancy dish would also be fun. Fancy dessert dishes could be your large wine goblets stored in the cupboard or exquisite glass coffee cups.

When you want more appeal and more enticement to your summer fruit desserts always present them in attractive containers. Your family and guests will enjoy them the more.

Have the freedom to experiment on the fruits you have in the fridge and let your intuition dictate you on coming up with the yummy dessert.

Summer fruit desserts are cool, fun, and exciting from the way it is prepared to the moment you feel it inside your mouth. Summer fruit desserts are aimed to delight each person’s taste buds. So go for them when your family needs to cool off.

The French are known for their elegant couture. It’s amazing to note that the catwalks of its capital Paris, which is dubbed as the world’s fashion hub, are dominated with fabulous and highly-fashionable pieces made from simple materials. Successfully, French ingenuity were extended to their cuisine.

Soufflés are evident culinary masterpieces that reflect creativity and ingenuity of the French. It is a fluffy but light baked dessert made with ordinary ingredients such as egg yolks, beaten egg whites, butter, flour, milk, and cheese.

The looks and the procedure of making a soufflés are said to embody the French sophistication and elegance. The word soufflés is derived from French verb souffler, a verb that means “to blow up” or “puff up”, which actually occurs while baking the dessert.

It is basically composed of flavoring base usually puree or cream sauce of cheese of chocolate and beaten egg whites, which allows the dessert to lift.

What makes soufflés as fashionable dessert is the way it is served in different enticing shapes and sizes depending on the creative whims of the baker or chef. Even the way it should fluff has an artistic presentation.

Taste-wise, soufflés are more delectable than it looks. It is served in savory sweet, hot, or cold. Aside from being a dessert, it could also be taken as a main dish, where meat, fish, or vegetables are added to the mixture of ingredients. Dessert soufflés, on the other hand, could be done baked, chilled, or frozen.

Like couture, which needs a perfect cut, making the dessert also requires to perfectly follow a sophisticated cooking method, which starts from using squeaky clean mixing equipment especially the ones being used to beat the egg whites such as the mixing bowl and beater.

Copper, stainless steel, or glass bowls should also be used in doing the egg beating process. Adding a pinch of cream of tartar and a pinch of salt is also recommended while beating the egg whites.

Ensuring that the egg whites won’t be over beaten and baking it on the lowest rack of the pre-heated oven should also is done to achieve a smooth and fine crust. Or else it would appear unappetizingly leathery.

Refrigerating or freezing buttered dishes and using parchment collar to guide the rise of the soufflés are also part of the works. Soufflés truly allows one to gastronomically experience the unique French couture in a plate.

You are in a romantic candle-lit dinner date one lovely evening. Everything’s perfectly mushy with you sharing a formal full course meal dinner with your dream guy, sipping perfectly chilled wine and with violin music on the background.

You’re both having a delightful conversation then suddenly when the dessert was served you politely refuse the final course leaving your date not to eat his dessert as well or subliminally make him hurry to finish his serving fast or worst get him turned off by you.

Skipping desserts could be a perfect date spoiler. Desserts are actually part of the whole dating process as it helps stimulate chemicals in your body that sets you to feel more romantically in love atmosphere.

But more women seem to dread the fattening effect of tongue-friendly sweets more than the thought of losing a prospective lifetime partner. This, however, need not to happen if they choose to order sorbets in the menu.

Sorbets, believe it or not, are non-fat frozen dessert similar to sherbets, which is a frozen sweetened fruit juice, minus the milk. It is the most fitting dessert for the diet-conscious sweet-toothed women.

In fact, sorbets are a trendy choice for night partygoers since the dessert drink could be served with alcohol, which gives the dessert a softer and creamier texture.

Sorbets are dubbed as the first iced dessert with birth dating back the first century A.D. when Roman Emperor Nero first concocted the dessert.

According to folklore, the emperor got the idea when one day palace runner were passing hand over hand buckets of snow to the banquet hall and thought of mixing it with honey and wine.

The concoction was later passed to generations and places. The frozen dessert is believed to have reached France in 1500s but only served to royalties. It only hit the streets of Paris two a century later and spread to England and the rest of Europe.

Sorbets can be easily can be easily concocted at home. Just remember that sorbets main ingredient is the fruit. Start by boiling a crushed fruit and sugar to create syrup.

After letting the syrup to naturally cool down at room temperature, stir sorbets in fruit juice, wine, or liquor then place it in the freezer. Stir the mixture every 20 minutes until a finely crushed ice texture is achieved.

Summer is definitely hot. Yes, the sun would set brimming heat into the surface of the earth but what makes it really hotter is the sight of more skin and body. A sun shiny day is practical times show that sexy body, which means wearing fewer clothes to beat the heat.

Some would bid to sport a perfectly fit if not alluring body, which requires strong willpower and determination to stay away from eating or drinking fattening treats.

The fight with the enormous sun, however, appears to be an exhausting given the tempting scenario of wanting to sit down, relax and cool down with a refreshing ice cold treat such as ice cream, a sinful indulgence that could ruin your figure! But one can fret no more because sherbets are here to delight you.

Sherbets are low-fat fruit flavored ice cream. This frozen delight serves as a perfect refuge for body conscious ice cream lovers.

Also known as sherbets, the dessert, which can be easily found in grocery stores, is actually a puree or sweetened fruit juice frozen with milk, egg whites, light cream, or gelatin that is guaranteed to have less fat content.

In fact, the United States government regulated manufacturers of the dessert to strictly maintain a milkfat content of around 1% to 2% only though requiring the product to be a bit sweeter than ice cream.

Otherwise, the product is automatically labeled as ice cream in the market. So feel safe to grab that sherbets-labeled item in the grocery shelf.

Sherbets have Turkish origin but these were some historical accounts saying that the Chinese developed the dessert then passed it on to Arab traders, who spread it in Europe. The name sherbets is derived from the Turkish word serbat

Traditionally, sherbets serve as a medicinal drink in Turkey, where the cold frozen drink dessert is mixed with cornelian cherries, rose hips, licorice, and a variety of spices.

The fruits and spices, which are grown in the gardens of the Ottoman Palace under the control of doctors and pharmacist, are the source of the dessert’s effective healing power.

Sherbets are actually being served after circumcision rites and being recommended to mothers, who have just given childbirth, to help them produce more milk needed in breastfeeding their babies.

From its birth to its continuing existence, sherbets proved one thing. It is a cool pro-body and pro-health indulging treat.

Enticing and deliciously sweet, puddings are the household dessert in every European home. With just one look at it, one can expect a tempting treat for the sweet tooth but more surprises are actually in store once you put it into your mouth and taste the hidden treats inside.

Born in one of the kitchens in Europe, puddings also have traditional preparation beliefs that could give the awaited surprise in your life.

Majority of the countries in Europe actually used the word pudding to refer to a dessert. The word pudding evolved from the French word boudin through the Latin word botellus, which means small sausage that are used in the original or first puddings during the medieval era.

Puddings are usually defined as any of the various mixes of soft sweet desserts or meat, sausage as mentioned earlier, thickened with flour or any binder encasing or hiding the mixes of indulging ingredients that were baked, steamed, or boiled.

In fact, culinary experts class the dessert as those served with meat and those served with fruits.

Dessert writers, on the other hand, say that puddings were originally boiled in a bag or cloth then was later steamed where a cloth covered buttered bowl is used and lastly a baked and chilled pudding came in with the procedures.

Culinary innovations were later made in preparing puddings such as the use of instant mixes of sugar or milk and eggs or other thickening agents that resulted to custard or mousse-like smooth and creamy dessert, which is more popular for the Americans.

Traditional puddings, on the other hand, are also topped with whipped cream and fresh fruits as another innovation.

Puddings also have an amusing and enchanting practice on how it is originally served. The Christmas holiday plum pudding, for instance, is traditionally served with tiny silver charms either topped or baked in the pudding.

The charms could be a silver coin, which is believed to attract wealth or a silver miniature anchor for safe harbor. A wishbone is also used to bring good luck in the family.

Another tradition in preparing the pudding is for every household member to simultaneously stir the pudding batter using the wooden spoon and later make a wish.

Europe is known for its dream-like royalties, which are often related to enchanting fairy tales of our childhood. Puddings are just another magical treat of the continent for the rest of the world.

Pies are baked foods consisting of a baked pastry shell that completely covers a filling. Pies for desserts contain sweet fillings such as fruits, creams, and chocolates and other food items that add flavor or texture such as cheeses and nuts.

There are also pies that have only a top crust covering a filling, usually fruits, placed on a dish. These pie versions are known as cobbler, crumble or crisps. Pies with a crust only at the bottom have sweet fillings that often do not have to be cooked. These are better known as tarts.

Popular pies for dessert include apple pie, apricot pie, blueberry pie, cherry pie, cream pie, peach pie, strawberry pie and, of course, pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving dessert. It is also common for pie desserts to combine more than one fruit.

Some examples are cherry lemon pies and cranberry apple pies. Aside from fruit pies, pies that also make wonderful desserts make use of other sweet and savory ingredients such as peanut butter, meringue, sour cream, flavored creams, coconut, and ice cream.

Ice cream pies are delightful and easy-to-make frozen desserts. Simply spread ice cream and sherbet into the pie crust, freeze, and top with whipped cream and then freeze again. Remove the ice cream pie from your freezer about 30 minutes before you serve it.

Lastly, top with fruit slices and coconut flakes. You can use vanilla ice cream and orange sherbet and orange slices for toppings or choose your flavors.

Fruit pies that are servedwith a scoop or scoops of ice cream are known in the United States as “à la mode”, the most popular kind is apple pie à la mode.

Here are some tips in making fruit pies:

Make two-crust pies on the night before you will use them. Refrigerate them overnight and you will have perfect crusts to bake with in the morning. Brush some milk over a two-crust pie to get a pleasant browned look.

Make pumpkin pie topping sweeter by layering marshmallows in the bottom of the pie. When baked, the marshmallows will expand to the top. Prevent fruit juice from oozing from the pie into the oven by inserting short drinking straws into the openings in the crust to let steam out when baking.

With the thousands of pie recipes available from classic fruit pies to modern cream pie and gourmet pie, you will surely the find the perfect pie dessert to make for simple family gatherings to special occasions.

Petits fours are small bite-sized cakes or pastries that are generally served as a dessert after or as part of a large buffet meal. Petits fours are also often served with afternoon tea.

The French term petits fours when literally translated means “small oven”, which came from the cooking method use to make these cakes.

In the past, the French baked cakes in ovens fueled by coal, which reached high temperatures, and after large cakes are baked the ovens would still be hot enough to bake smaller cakes. These small cakes are what are known today as petits fourss.

Generally, petits fours are about an inch square and 2 inches high. They are made with layers of cake and frosting, usually, butter cream but you can also use other flavors such

As chocolate, coffee, almond or vanilla extract, orange, or cream cheese.

The layers then are coated with fondant, often in pastel colors. Because petits fours are basically small cakes, you can decorate them with candy embellishments much like you would regular sized cakes although sugar roses are typically used.

These dessert treats have two basic types, which are called sec and glacé. Sec means dry so petits fours sec are the ones that do not require any embellishments once baked.

You can serve them for dessert as is and these confections include puff pastries, ladyfingers, baked meringues and macaroons.

Glacé, on the other hand, means iced so petits fours glace need icing, glaze or some other decoration after they are baked. This glacé may also be filled with jam, chocolate, cream or other sweet filling.

A good base for petits fours glace is a mini sponge cake or angel food cake. Examples of it glacé are tarts, eclairs and mini fondant or frosted cakes.

As an afternoon snack, petits fours are traditionally served with tea accompanies by ice cream or any sweet frozen dessert. As a dessert after a large meal, petits fours are served with a dessert beverage such as coffee, tea, dessert wine or liquor.

Some excellent flavor combinations for petits fours are vanilla with marzipan and raspberry filling, orange chocolate petits fours, and fudge mint petits fours.

Of course, the variety of flavors that you can use as well as the shapes and decoration are practically endless. That is why you can petits fours make delightful desserts in any occasion from baby or bridal showers to a formal business dinner or luncheon or a wedding reception.
