Many people who maintain gardens have a large amount of organic waste, from grass clippings to leaves and dead plants. Unfortunately, many waste money and time having these wastes transported to a landfill.

It isn’t just a waste of good compost; it’s a waste of everything that goes into the process of transporting it (the garbage man’s time, the money you pay for the removal, etc). It is truly a travesty.

All this garbage that people are trying to get rid of can be a better supplement for your garden than any fertilizer or chemical.

If you properly facilitate the decomposition of all of the garbage, it will alter chemically until it is in such a state that it can be nothing but beneficial nutrition for other plants. Therefore you can turn all the stuff you would have thrown away into top grade fertilizer for your garden with garden compost.

How is garden compost useful?

Usually garden compost is maintained in a pile somewhere in your backyard. Usually the thought of a garden compost heap brings disturbing images to ones mind; heaps of rotten garbage emitting a horrid odor.

However, if you maintain it correctly you’ll be able to produce great garden compost without producing an offensive odor. When you first began your compost pile in an effort to improve environmental health, you can make several major errors.

These included preventing the pile from the oxygen it truly needed, and keeping it to dry. It ended up decomposing in a very non-beneficial way, and producing an odor so foul that you will have government agents knocking at my door.

When you are choosing your spot where you will be putting all of these materials, you should aim for a higher square footage. Having a really deep pile of garden compost is not a good idea, because generally the deeper sections won’t be exposed to anything that is required for the process to work.

It is better to spread it all out over a large area. If you have a shed or a tool shack of some sort, it is a possibility to spread it over the roof (with boards to keep it from falling off, of course). You might have seen this done several times, and it helps keep the pile out of the way while still maintaining a large square footage.

A garden compost heap can consist of any organic garbage from your yard, garden or kitchen. This includes leaves, grass, any leftover food that won’t be eaten, or newspaper (no more than a fifth of your pile should consist of newspaper, due to it having a harder time composting with the rest of the materials).

Usually if you have a barrel devoted to storing all of these things, it will fill up within several weeks. It is quite easy to obtain garden compost, but the hard part truly comes in getting it to compost.

After you have begun to get a large assortment of materials in your garden compost heap, you should moisten the whole garden compost pile. This encourages the process of composting. Also chop every element of the pile into the smallest pieces possible.

As the materials start to compress and meld together as they decompose, frequently head outside and aerate the pile. You can use a shovel to mix it all up, or an aeration tool to poke dozens of tiny holes into it.

Doing this with garden compost will increase the oxygen flow to each part of the pile, and oxygen is required for any decomposition to take place.

If maintaining garden compost pile sounds like something that would interest you, start considering the different placement options. The hardest part about maintaining garden compost pile is choosing a spot that provides enough square footage without intruding on the rest of your yard or garden.

While usually you can prevent the horrible odors that most people associate with garden compost heaps, it’s still not a pleasant thing to have to look at whenever you go for a walk in your garden.

When it comes to flowers for the garden, annuals and perennials are the two largest families.

Plants designated as annuals are those that grow from seed, blossom, set seed and die within a single season.

Perennials are the best for gardening

Perennials, on the other hand, have the ability to return to life season after season. That means that after the bed is established, you may not need to replant for a number of years.

The actual life span of each perennial will vary from variety to variety, but in order to be classed as a perennial a plant must be able to come back for at least two seasons.

They are available in a seemingly endless amount of colors, sizes, shapes and textures, and there are perennials available to please just about any gardener.

In addition, the ability to plant the perennials only once and have them come back year after year makes them a favorite with all kinds of gardeners. In addition, perennials are suitable for virtually any location, and most varieties grow well in a variety of climates and soil types.

Some perennials, such as aster, phlox, geraniums and peonies, are valued mostly for their beautiful flowers, while other varieties of them are more highly prized for their lush foliage.

The longevity of different types of perennials varies, and some types of them can last for decades. Each type of perennial will list the average lifespan of the plant, so it is important to check the longevity rating when buying them.

If you are looking for a perennial that enjoys a legendary longevity, you may want to look into peonies. Many plantings of peonies have been known to last from one generation to the next.

Many gardeners like to plant a combination of annuals, perennials and bulbs, and this can be a great way to provide a wonderful variety of color in the garden, while cutting back on the work the gardener must do.

Many gardeners like to use perennials in parts of the garden that are difficult to plant, or using perennials as landscape plants. This can be a great strategy, and many people are finding that perennials are wonderful, beautiful plants.

Many gardeners like to accent their front yard, flagpole, mailbox or other small areas with plantings of perennials, and these plants are great for small spaces like those.

In addition, the wide varieties of colors perennials come in mean they can be used to accent just about any type of home décor. Perennials can even make a great addition to a vegetable garden, particularly to provide a colorful border or to edge the planting beds.

In addition, perennials can be used with shrubs and other larger plants in order to provide a beautiful splash of color and beauty in an otherwise plain landscape.

After all, there is no surprise that if you choose to completely re-do your landscape you will spend a great deal of money.

However, there are surprising hidden landscaping prices in nearly any landscaping project, even some of the small ones.

It is important to be aware of some of the landscaping prices that you might not normally think of before you begin a project.

Otherwise, you will find that the true landscaping price is much more than you thought landscaping price would be, and you may discover that you might not have been able to afford your landscape change after all.

Following are the features in which landscaping prices involved:

Perhaps the most hidden of landscaping prices involves features that require lighting and water. Many people think landscaping prices include only of the cost of the equipment, and the cost of putting it in (which is minimal if they put it in themselves). They fail to consider how much money they will spend in the form of paying for increased energy and water usage.

With outdoor lighting, it is possible to mitigate landscaping price somewhat by buying more energy efficient bulbs, or by confining the use of outdoor lighting to times when there is a special occasion. There is no reason for the lighting if you only use it so that the neighbors can admire your landscape even at night.

Reserve the use of your outdoor lighting for times when you are entertaining people out of doors, or when you are sitting in your yard at night, and may need the light. Landscaping prices include water features are a double whammy, as they require energy and water.

Using a feature that reuses its own water can cut down a little bit on your water usage (although there will always be water lost to evaporation), and it is now possible to find some features that use less energy. However, if you must have a water feature and are afraid of the Landscaping prices you will incur, you can always choose a very small pond or waterfall.

Related to the issue of water features is paying for water use when you water the lawn. Setting up sprinklers on a timer will ensure that you do not have to rely on your memory to remember to turn them off. It is important to note that most people water their lawns two or three times more then they need to.

The average lawn actually receives about the same amount of water as a tropical rainforest. This is not necessary for your lawn. Watering each part of your lawn for 15 minutes two or three times a week (depending on climate) is usually sufficient, if it is not new sod (which requires a good soak every day the first week).

Additionally, it is a good idea to take into account the amount of extra water you will be using to help sod or a tree establish itself. This can add up to be quite a bit of extra water, and if you city charges more money once your usage reaches a certain point, landscaping price can be even more costly.

Also, you may not realize how much money you might spend if your soil is poor. Before being in raptures about a particular plant, determine what kind of soil it needs to thrive; this will make a difference in whether your plant lives or dies. The costs of adding fertilizer to sandy soil or gypsum to clay soil can begin to add up.

This problem can be remedied, however, if you examine what plants grow natively in your region. By choosing plants that grow well in the soil you have, or in near conditions, you can save a great deal on soil amendment. Most local master gardeners will give you guidance on native plants for free, or for a very small fee.

Just as there are hidden costs in nearly everything, landscaping prices also hidden. The key is to be informed about the various consequences of your landscape choices, and to be careful in what you decide to do.

While the upfront landscaping prices may not be too unreasonable, you may find that as you continue to enjoy your new landscape, the later landscaping prices may be more than your landscape is worth.

Mulch is any type of material placed over the top of the soil to improve the soil. This helps the soil retains moisture and can improve soil conditions.

Additionally, mulch reduces weed competition by restricting the number of weeds that grow around your landscape plants.

You can improve the health of your plants by using this around them to minimize damage by lawn mower blight and weed whacking.

When one practices proper mulching, it can actually help the landscape maintain a healthy appearance. It can even contribute to the look of a well-groomed landscape.

It is important, however, to properly apply your mulch. If it is not applied properly, you might find that rather than helping, you can cause harm to your plants and trees.

Following is the usage of different types of mulches:

There are many different types of mulch. Just as there are different fertilizers, mulches come made from different materials. They can be bought commercially, or you can create your own mulch and save money. The two main classifications of mulch are inorganic and organic.

Many people believe that all this is organic, but it is not. Inorganic mulches, while more effective at keeping out weeds, will not add to the composition of the soil, as it contains no nutrients to put into the soil. Inorganic mulches include various types of pulverized rubber, some geotextile fabrics, and even stones and lava rock.

Organic mulches are comprised of things like woods chips, bark, leaves, pine needles, compost mixtures, cocoa hulls, and other mulches derived from plants. Even shredded paper, used in small amounts, can contribute to organic mulch. The first thing to realize when properly applying this is that there is such a thing as too much.

Too much of this can result in a variety of problems. Because this does help retain moisture, too much mulch can lead to excess moisture. Especially in trees, this can lead to root rot. Do not pile this against the stems of plants or the trunks of trees, as this can cause stress on the plant tissues and lead to pest problems. Too much mulch can also alter the pH of the soil, causing toxicities or deficiencies.

Piled mulch provides nice homes for rodents, which in turn may chew the plant roots and cause tree girdling. Fine mulch can become matted if too thick and then prevent air and moisture penetration. Be aware of the type of mulch you are using. Replace inorganic mulch each year, and if you have mulch that breaks down slowly (like mulch containing cypress bark), do not add more mulch each year.

Wait until this is mostly broken down before adding a new layer.Proper mulch depth is about two to four inches deep and not directly up against trunks or plant stems. For trees, mulch should be applied at least out to the drip line, with a space between this and the tree.

The drip line is the border of the canopy of the tree. Root systems extend beyond the drip line, so it is okay to spread a thin layer of mulch beyond the drip line.

Consider below factors before mulching:

In order to properly apply this, it is important to take into account several factors. You should first inspect the area. Find out if there is enough drainage, you should also determine whether the type of this you will use is compatible with the plants you have. Check the depth of already placed mulch and do not add more if the depth is sufficient. Rake this to prevent matting.

There are vegetable-based dyes that can improve the appearance of this that may be fading, but that does not need to be replaced. If there is poor drainage, 2 inches may be too much. Apply a thinner layer of this in these areas to prevent too much moisture retention. The benefits of proper mulching are many.

When properly applying this, you are contributing to the health of your landscape, making it more resistant to disease, insects, and drought. Organic mulches also contribute to the makeup of the soil, adding nutrients and making the soil richer and better for the plants.

By making good use of this, and avoiding excesses, it is possible for you to increase the health of your landscape and decrease the costs associated with maintenance and treatment.

Lawn care is often the most basic of landscaping chores.

Taking lawn care is practically an American institution. There is much pride in ensuring that you have a healthy and beautiful lawn.

Additionally, it is satisfying to know that you can take lawn care on your own for much less than paying someone else to take lawn care.

With lawn care you get that sense of satisfaction knowing that you did a great job on your lawn. But in order to have a great looking home landscape, there are a few things to keep in mind regarding lawn care basics.

But once you have the lawn care basics down, and if you keep with them, there is no stopping you from having a great looking lawn.

How can you clean your lawn?

Before you do anything for your lawn care, like mowing, you need to make sure that you clean the lawn. This means raking up leaves and debris, and clearing the area of unwanted brush.

If you are looking to have a level lawn, getting rid of bumps and or dips, there are some things that you can do. To get rid of little valleys, you can fill the holes with topsoil and then add grass seed.

Bumps can be removed by using a garden spade to cut an X in the raised area. Peel back the sod and then remove the soil as needed before replacing the sod.

By cleaning and leveling your yard, you will make it easier to mow the lawn, and your yard will have a pleasing uniformity of appearance. Mowing the grass one of the lawn care things should be done regularly.

Depending on where you live, and how fast your grass grows, this may need to be done once every week or once every other week. You should adjust the lawn mower blade so that it does not cut off more than one third of the grass’s height.

The surface area of each blade of grass is important in sustaining the health of the lawn. If the grass is cut to short, an environment especially conducive to disease is created, and this can result in a rather unhealthy lawn.

Following are the necessary things for lawn care:

One of the essentials of lawn care is making sure that you do not have too much soil compaction. Over time, your soil will become compacted and harder beneath the grass. If you will not take this type of lawn care then it begins to cause problems like moisture penetration and grass root restriction. Aeration for lawn care makes it possible for your soil to “breathe” a little easier.

There are two types of aeration for your lawn care. One of the essentials of lawn care called “plugging,” where a special device removes clumps of soil, about the size of a finger, from out of the ground. The other kind simply punches holes into the soil.

The point, however, is that this allows water seep down better (preventing erosion and drying out), as well as providing room for helpful organisms like earthworms to live. It is usually possible to rent an aerator if you do not wish to buy one. It is good to aerate about once every year or two.

Fertilizer can help your lawn grow as well. While it is not strictly necessary, and while it is possible to grow a healthy and attractive lawn without the aid of fertilizers, many people find them very helpful. It is important not to apply too much; however, as this can result in the death of your lawn, and also can result in harm to the environment as the excess fertilizer is washed away.

For your lawn care, fertilizers usually come in liquid or granular form. For your essentials of lawn care liquid fertilizers act fast and require application every two to three weeks. For your lawn care they can be applied with a hose-end sprayer or by using a watering can. For your lawn care granules are dry and require that you water the lawn immediately after their application.

For your lawn care you most often use hand spreaders or mechanical spreaders to disburse these types of fertilizers. They can last eight to twelve weeks. When you use fertilizer for your lawn care, you should be aware that it might be harmful to let your children play on the lawn for a few days.

For your lawn care you need to make sure that the fertilizer has been absorbed below the surface before allowing yourself or others to play on the grass. Many conscientious landscapers find that they do not need fertilizers for lawn care.

There is no doubt that when landscaping one wants to save money, as well as have an attractive property.

Not only can landscape help you beautify your home, but landscape can also provide a source of satisfying exercise in the fresh air.

When you take care of your yard on your own, it is possible to save money and to improve your physical conditioning.

But if the landscape turns out to look bad, then that is so much time and money wasted. However, it is possible to ensure a better-looking landscape by following a few tips that can help you take better care of your yard.

You have to know following for better looking landscape:

Know your soil type. Some plants thrive in soil with more acidity, and others prefer a little more alkali. Additionally, sandy soil and clay soil, as well as the presence of a loamy soil, can make a difference in what types of plants will thrive in a landscape.

You should have your soil evaluated in order to determine what types of vegetation should be planted on your property.

When you purchase plants that will succeed in the soil conditions present in your landscape, then you make a wiser money decision, and you end up with a more attractive landscape. If there are plants that you would like to use in your soil, but soil is not quite ideal, it is possible to improve the soil to proper conditions of your landscape.

You need only add mulch or peat, or to add crushed limestone or clamshells, depending upon what you hope to accomplish. As long as there is not a great difference in what you have and what you hope to achieve, it is possible to make soil adjustments in your landscape to be more accommodating. Understand how much each of the plants needs space.

There are some plants that require more room for their root systems than others. If you choose one plant that tends to grow everywhere, and you do not have adequate space, you will find that your other plants may be crowded out or that they may choke and die. Also, make sure you understand the spacing requirements for between plants.

Many shrubs and small trees need to be planted in your landscape these should be at least three to four feet apart to have enough room to grow.Use native plants in your landscape design. One of the most effective things you can do to ensure a good-looking yard is to make use of native plants. Find out what plants grow best in your landscape area, and what plants are indigenous to the region.

This way you will already be ahead, in that you know that the plants you choose are adapted to the climate. You will not have to struggle against natural inclinations to keep your landscape looking beautiful. If you do use non-native plants in your landscape, assure yourself that they come from a place that shares a climate similar to the one in which you live.

Plan your landscape around different blooming times. Different plants bloom at various times throughout the year. If all of the plants in your landscape are at their most attractive all at the same time, then your yard will look beautiful for a few weeks each year, but quite possible ugly the rest of the year.

One way to help avoid this is to choose attractive bushes and shrubs that look good green, but also have some sort flower. However, it is a good idea to stagger plants among each other. Plant tulips and crocus among later-blooming plants so that in early spring the bulbs bloom, and then when those flowers’ time is up, the next plants will be in bloom.

In this way the cycle of your landscape is in keeping with the seasons, and your landscape looks attractive all year round.Use wood chips around shrubs, bushes and trees. Wood chips can help the landscape around shrubs, bushes, and trees look more attractive.

Not only do the chips cover the ground (often looking better than dirt), but they also help keep in moisture, repel weeds, and provide natural food as they break down. Likewise, attractive groundcover like chicks and hens placed around trees and shrubs can make the landscape more interesting and pleasing to the eye.

Japanese gardens are becoming more and more popular as landscaping features.

This is because Japanese gardens seem to have an inherent feeling of peace and calm attached to them.

Additionally, if properly planned and maintained, Japanese gardens do not need to be expensive, nor do they need to be time consuming to take care of.

One of the biggest misconceptions that many people have is that a Japanese garden is supposed to have exotic flowers. This is not true, as most Japanese gardens actually make more use of structures and plants to give them their distinctive look.

It is a good idea to understand the principles behind Japanese gardens in order to have one that is truly authentic and one that is not hard to take care of because of high maintenance exotic flowers.

Following are helpful in planning Japanese garden:

One of the first principles in planning a Japanese garden is to take into account nature. Square ponds are not natural, but round ones are. Also, using shapes that occur in nature, such as rounded edges, complements the feeling of nature and peace. Also inherent in the principles of Japanese gardens is the elements of space.

Many people feel that there are “empty” portions of Japanese gardens and the impulse is to fill them in. Leaving some attractive empty space accents the other portions of the landscape. Also understanding the concept of size is important. Do not put something large in a small space. It looks out of place and is not in balance with its surroundings.

Try to create a Japanese garden space that complements the rest of the landscape, and use elements that complement each other.Enclosures are also part of the basic design of a Japanese garden. In Japanese gardens Fences and gates create a feeling of seclusion, and also of retreat.

Entrance and exit of Japanese gardens are important, not only to seal the Japanese garden away (often symbolically) from the outside, but also because it indicates moving in and moving out. Additionally, fences offer a barrier from the world, where the Japanese garden can be enjoyed fully without reference to the cares that exist outside the Japanese garden.

There is no singular design in a Japanese garden, and many people prefer to take elements and aspects of the Japanese garden and incorporate them in unique ways.

Following are the elements for designing Japanese gardens:

Some elements of Japanese gardens include rock, water, plantings, ornaments, and borrowed scenery. Each of these has a specific purpose. Rock is the main foundation of the Japanese garden. After properly laying out the stones, the rest of the Japanese garden practically builds itself. Stone elements include tall vertical stones, short vertical stones, horizontal stones, arched stones, and reclining stones.

Stepping stones and rock pathways are also used in your Japanese garden. Placement of the rock is important for your Japanese garden, as the rocks have meanings. However, if you are more about aesthetics, you can simply place the rocks where you feel they best complement the look and feel of the garden. Water can be literal, as in a built water feature, or simulated, as with raked gravel or sand.

You can even make symbolic water by fitting river stones tightly together. The sound of actual water is calming and soothing, and it adds to the serenity of the garden. The Japanese also view water as the symbol of the passage of time.Plantings are secondary to the role of stones in a Japanese garden. However, they are important and a main concern of the Japanese garden design.

Placement of the plantings, as with the stones, is important to the harmony of the landscape design. You need not use bamboo trees or maples for your Japanese garden if you do not find them pleasing. Ornamental grasses, evergreens, and a variety of deciduous trees can be very attractive in your garden, and still fulfill the basic principles of the Japanese garden.

Ornaments are things that serve to enhance the Japanese garden. They should not be main focuses. They are simply accents and not to be treated as main architectural elements in the Japanese garden. Some ornaments include lanterns, basins, stupas, and even some sculpture.

Borrowed scenery consists of element that can be seen from within the Japanese garden, but that are not actually located inside the confines of the Japanese garden. Different elements can be placed to accent a distant mountain or to reveal a beautiful tree on someone else’s property.

Most people think of landscaping as rocks carefully placed, manicured lawns, and large trees scattered about a property. However, a garden can make a very attractive addition to any landscape.

Whether it is an herb garden or whether it is a vegetable garden, these features can be just as beautiful as any other landscape element, and provide added benefits as well.

Well maintained herb and vegetable gardens also provide other benefits: herb and vegetable gardens are a source of food and can be a source of very pleasing smells.

An herb garden is one of the most common types of edible landscape. This is because they are very easy to grow, very tolerant of a variety of climates and conditions, and because they grow rapidly.

Additionally, herbs are more than just tasty. Many of them look very nice, with attractively shaped leaves and different shades of green that can add a subtle beauty to the landscape. Not only have that, but herbs often smelled nice. They can surround your home with a pleasing perfume that exudes a true sense of “home.”

Following are the herbs for your herb garden:

Many people plant parsley, rosemary, and thyme in their herb gardens, but there are other herbs that can be planted as well. Cilantro is a little milder than parsley, and it has a different look.

Mint is another herb that many people do not think to plant, as is lavender. Both of these herbs look different, and they both give off very nice scents. Another herb with a very attractive smell is Roman chamomile.

Even though some of these herbs may be less frequently used, it is possible to find plenty of recipes that use them, and lavender and chamomile are noted for their usefulness in providing an atmosphere of calm. So even the scents can be of use. Simple bring them into the house and enjoy the feelings that accompany the smell.

What plants can you choose for your vegetable garden?

Vegetable gardens are other edible landscaping devices that can look very attractive. Vegetable gardens too, can be planted in a variety of climates, and can be grown in a variety of soils.

For your Vegetable gardens there are some plants that grow only in certain regions, but your basic vegetable garden fare can be grown almost anywhere.

Just the look of green plants has been shown to be soothing, and when you grow your own food in vegetable garden, it adds another dimension of satisfied feelings associated with self-confidence and accomplishment.

Every vegetable has its own look to vegetable garden, and so it is possible to enjoy a variety of different looks by carefully choosing the plants that you grow in your vegetable garden.

However, for your vegetable garden you should choose, first and foremost, plants that you will eat. If you are not going to eat much squash, avoid planting it in your vegetable garden.

But there are plenty of vegetables for your vegetable garden that have very attractive looking plants and even flowers. Peas have cute little flowers and send up beautiful curly vines.

And there are many species of pepper that look beautiful after the fruit has arrived, with their yellow, greens, and reds.

When you use herb and vegetable gardens as part of the landscape, there is no need to plant them all together in one place. Spread them around the yard. Use tomato plants and squash plants (including pumpkins) can be used as accents for your vegetable garden.

Herbs make excellent ground cover. Most vegetables and herbs can be grown very successfully in containers. You can make a very attractive landscape design if you use flower boxes for your herbs, and if you use quaint old antique washtubs for things like beans. Pretty sticks can be decorated to emerge from decorative tins for your peas.

The great thing about growing herb and vegetable gardens as part of your landscape is the fact that they are edible. They do not cost very much to plant, and they can save you even more money down the road when you buy less produce at the grocery store. Additionally, if you have too much you can always bottle or freeze it for later.

Many people use the excess plants from herb and vegetable gardens as gifts to their neighbors or family members. There is no reason to relegate herb and vegetable gardens to some hidden corner of the property, or even to herb and vegetable garden in a conventional way, with large plots.

You can add distinction to your yard by using the unique and inexpensive method of landscaping with herbs and vegetables.

Trees are a beautiful and desirable part of almost any landscape. They provide comfortable shade, protect against soil erosion, and can even contribute to the energy efficiency of a home.

Additionally, trees are beautiful and can make any landscape attractive. Any home with a nice, attractive, well-maintained tree on its property enjoys increased property value.

But in order to enjoy a tree, it must first be properly planted. There are three main ways that plantings can be bought; subsequently, there are different ways to plant them. You may plant a bare root tree, a container tree, or a ball and burlap tree.

Each of these types of seedling set-ups requires a different technique in planting. However, it is very possible to do this planting yourself, saving money and keeping within a reasonable budget.

How can you plant different trees?

Planting a bare root tree: This is a tree moved from one location to another (dug up and transplanted). The first thing you should do is make sure you have the proper tools: a garden fork, a shovel, two wooden stakes, tree ties, and mulch. Use a shovel to mark out the area of the planned hole. This hole should be at least twice the diameter of the tree’s root system.

Once you have the area marked out, with a shallow hole already dug within the markings, use the garden fork to scarify the edges of the hole.

This action loosens the soil and will make it easier for the roots to properly expand. In the center of your hole, build a small mound. Then place the two stakes into the ground on opposite sides of the mound.

The stakes act as stabilizers and supports to the tree as it works to establish itself. You should try to make sure that you plant the tree at the same depth at which it was planted before. Spread the roots over the mound. Next, add enough soil to support the tree (but not fill up the hole) and then spray the area with water. Backfill the hole with a little more soil, add water again.

Then repeat two or three more times, completely filling in the hole.Tamp the soil down to get rid of air pockets surrounding the tree’s roots. If your climate is dry, or if water drains away quickly, a moat should be dug around the tree to retain water. Fasten the tree ties to the stakes and the tree, not too tightly, to ensure that the tree receives adequate support for its first year in the new area.

Two to four inches of mulch should be applied around the planting area, but be sure that the mulch does not touch the tree trunk. The tree should be watered well and the soil kept moist for the next year.Planting a container tree: This type of tree is often found at nurseries, coming in a pot or other plastic container.

Like with a bare root tree, it is necessary to have a shovel, garden fork, stakes, tree ties, and mulch. Then, using the container as a guide, mark out the planting using the shovel.

The hole will need to be right around three times the width of the container. The hole should be about one and a half times as deep as the height of the pot. After the hole has been properly dug, use the garden fork to scarify the hole’s sides.

Pound the two stakes (preferably cedar) into the ground angled outward. There should be enough room between the stakes for the root ball to fit. Water the tree in its container, and then gently lay it on its side. Remove the pot and gently tease the roots out with your hands. A small cultivator would also work. Backfill some of the soil into the hole. Place the tree in the center of the hole.

Make sure that the edge of the hole is level with the height of the container. It may be necessary to add soil until this level is achieved. After the tree is at the correct height, fill in the hole with soil, tamping it down as you go. Dig a moat if needed. Use your tree ties and apply mulch in much the same manner as the bare root tree. The tree will need to be kept moist for a year while it establishes itself.

Planting a ball and burlap tree (root ball surrounded by burlap sack):

This planting technique requires only a shovel, garden fork, mulch and scissors (or a knife). Dig a hole, much like with the container tree, of three times the root ball’s width. The hole should only be as deep as ball, however. Scarify the holes sides. Place the tree in the hole and use the scissors to remove twine or wire from the ball.

Remove the burlap altogether if it is synthetic. If it is natural, loosen the top layer and roll it down to the base of the ball. Fill in the hole and mulch, caring for it as other newly planted trees.

One of the evils naturally attending any landscape endeavor is the fact that weeds need to be taken care of.

There are plenty of ways to keep the weeds out, but chances are that at some point you are going to have to do some weeding. Even the best herbicides and the best-laid plastic liners are not full proof. Inevitably it will be necessary to pull weeds by hands.

But by making sure that you remove the offending plants, you will have a better-looking landscape over all, and can maintain a well-groomed yard. The proper way to weed by hand involves getting close to the weeds. This means getting down on your hands and knees and using your hands or maybe a small handheld tool to remove the weeds.

Getting close to the weeds allows you to attack each individually while causing very little, if any, harm to your more desirable plants. Additionally, while you are down there, you might as well look at your plants to ensure that they are in good health. Weeding can serve two purposes: getting rid of interlopers and allowing you to be aware of problems to your own plants before it is too late.

When is it easy to remove weeds?

You should pull even the smallest of the weeds. It is easier to pull them when they are small. Their roots are less developed, and they have less chance to wreak havoc on your own plants. After all, a weed takes moisture and nutrients that are intended for you plant and then hog them for it. If you get the weed when it is small, then it does not have ample time to weaken your plants.

It is best to the pull the entire weed out, including roots. Merely snipping them at the base leaves the main problem still in the ground. You can a small trowel to help you get under the weed.

It also helps to water your garden a few hours before hand to help the soil give a little.Pulling weeds early in the day will help you, as it is cooler and you can start the day off with some invigorating exercise.

You should weed regularly, once or twice a week. You could weed every day, but many people do not have time for that. But by setting a regular weeding schedule, you can make it part of your weekly routine and make sure that small weeds do not grow into large, ugly monsters.

Dead weeds can be added to the compost heap, as they do not decompose into more weeds. They merely break down into helpful organic material.

Following ways also help you in removing weeds:

Another thing that can help keep weeds down is mulch. Mulch keeps weeds out and it retains moisture in your garden. It is possible to use plastic mulch, and this will almost entirely keep all weeds out. However, it will not return nutrients to your soil, nor is it environmentally friendly. Organic mulch, created from the compost pile, can keep weeds down as long as it is applied thickly.

Any weeds that do happen to poke through the mulch are very easy to pull. Paper can be used in mulch, as long as you let it sit in the compost pile with everything else, and it adds extra weed protection. Organic mulch is environmentally friendly, and it acts as a natural fertilizer. Effective composting practices can save you a great deal of money in your landscaping efforts.

Of course, it is possible to use weed killers and herbicides to get rid of weeds in your landscape, or to keep them out. They make use of chemicals and are often the fastest way to get rid of weeds. They are very effective: often the most effective ways to get rid of weeds. Additionally, they require very little effort to apply. It is important, however, to be careful.

The chemicals are harmful and if improperly applied can damage your plants. They can also cause you trouble. Be sure that all weed killers and herbicides you use are legal and approved by the government.

And read the labels to ensure that you apply them properly and that you utilize proper protection to yourself, as some of the chemicals are harmful if you breathe them in or if they come in contact with your skin.
