Z Scale Model Railroad »

Z Scale Model Railroad

When the German model train manufacturer Märklin introduced the Z Scale Model Railroad, at 1:122 scale, Märklin called it the ‘Z’ scale specifically because of the perception that there won’t be any scale smaller (and like the English alphabet, the German alphabet ends with the ‘Z’).Introduced by Märklin, it is currently the smallest model railroading scale that is commercially available. But unlike the more prevalent HO and OO scale models, the Z Scale Model Railroad is not really that popular.

That is due to the problems resulted of its size. Without much weight, gravity cannot play a role as effective as the other models. A typical engine stock of a Z Scale Model Railroad can be as heavy as 20 grams, and that’s still well less than 1 oz.

This is a problem when a Z Scale Model train approaches a curve, as this much weight won’t allow the Z Scale Model Railroad to hold onto the rails during swerve. Derailing is a significant problem.

The reduced weight also won’t lend traction to the locomotive wheels, especially on ascent of steeper grades than 2%, a degree of railroad track grade that is effortless to other scales, like the N Scale where a 5% track grade is still maneuverable.

Vintage Lionel Model Trains Are Collector’s Favorite »

The history of vintage Lionel model trains are more than just a toy train to us, it was the joyful experience that we had with these toys that brought our families closer and painted smiles on our faces. Their products were amazingly crafted not just to look good but to even last for centuries to come.

Lionel Model Train is an all American manufacturer of toy trains and model railways. During their time, they were considered as the most popular toy trains in the US and one of the well-known all over the world.

The Lionel Company was established in 1900 by Joshua Lionel Cowen more than a century now. Although they manufacture model railroad, their products were mainly marketed as toy trains.

Vintage Lionel model trains are unquestionably, the most enduring toy train brand of all times in the US. Even if you look at basements and attics, there you shall see a toy box and at least one Lionel made toy train.

Many of these vintage Lionel model trains are still kept for decades and decades, that’s why they are very enticing to train collectors. They were even inducted in the 2006 US National Toy Hall of Fame as one of the old time favorites.

Preserving History With Steam Model Trains »

Steam Model Trains

The roots of transportation are quite vague to us humans but the early occurrences were that of the trains, Steam-powered trains that is. The rapid development in the transportation industry began in the emergence of steam engine.Steam locomotives are the first power provider of early trains in the railways. It was made by burning coal which produces intense steam to give the train a thrust. This type of transportation continued to be by far the most popular during its time just until after the Second World War.

In the middle of the 20th century, steam locomotives were eventually replaced by those powered by diesel or electricity. But Steam locomotives are noted to be less efficient than the two counterparts mentioned latter because it requires more manpower.

It is even known to hike up to twice as much as the cost and the distance traveled was way lower. By the end of 1970’s, western countries have completely eradicated steam locomotives.

By the dawn of 20th century, steam powered trains are almost unseen and was even said to only have existed in Western Europe and North America and only served as landmarks for its legacy which is quite a lure for the tourists.

N Scale Model Railroad »

As more and more hobbyists get into model railroading, range of preference then becomes an important subject. There are model railroaders that collect exclusively train and train cars, those that don’t deal with model railroad scenery and layouts.

These hobbyists would prefer larger scale models that have very detailed body (paint and decals) and working stock. And there are those model railroaders that want to build imaginative railroad tracks, a complicated series of interconnecting railways covering perhaps a miniature city block.

These hobbyists choose the N Scale Model Railroad, since the N Scale Model has small enough scale to allow for the most elaborate railroad layouts without consuming much space.

In fact, the N Scale Model Railroad is considered by many to be the elite scale choice for model railroading; for its expensiveness due to the exact manufacturing, the need for more than adequate skills in handling paint and decals, and the want for a model railroad layout and scenery.

If you see someone going for the N Scale Model Railroad, its almost assured he would be building a model railroad layout.

Old Lionel Model Trains Are Household Names »

Old Lionel Model TrainsWhen Joshua Lionel Cowen arrived in America after the Civil war, trains were the only type of public transportation and freight for cargoes. He grew fondness and interest for its unique mechanism and used it as an inspiration to build his own toy making company which is widely known today.

It was more than a century ago, in 1900, when Joshua founded the Lionel Corporation. Its major line was the production of toy trains and model railways. It was in a cramped and constricted building in NYC where their first office was located.

They started out with a few skillful employees and started to work their magic. They never anticipated that the people would support their products so much that they expanded into a million dollar business.

From its humble beginnings, nobody even dared to think that old Lionel model trains would become the most popular toy trains in the US and amongst the favorite in the world.

Almost every child in their era had at least one train. This can be attested because almost every American household’s attics and basements are projected to have at least one old Lionel model trains.

Model Railroad Track »

You can say that model railroading is an amalgam of interests. At first there is the interest of the model locomotive. Depending on the degree of involvement, either the hobbyist can build the model locomotives and the cars from scratch.

He buys a base model then proceeds to finish the item with corresponding paint and decals. Or he could buy a ready to run locomotive models, those models that are already done, paint and decals (and usually very expensive).

Second, there is the interest in Model Railroad Track.

For a good number of modelers, paying special attention to the model railroad track is as important as the train modeling, sometimes more so than the actual train and its working stock.

These enthusiasts can be sometimes called the “true” model railroaders, as this degree of interest is usually considered the essence of Model Railroading.

Easy and uncomplicated model railroad track can consist of a single track, sometimes not even a complete loop. They can be powered, though mostly by electricity wherein somewhere along the tracks is a mechanism that sets off the power of the train bringing it to halt.

Hobbyist Guide To Model Trains »

Model TrainsModel Trains are not just your average toy trains for they serve greater functions rather than just being a mere child’s plaything. They are more precise and realistic.

Model trains have existed in the industry for more than a century now. The first record of it being traced was even as early as 1840’s.

Model railroading or model trains as it is widely known, are reduced or miniature models of trains and railways. Its scale structures include locomotives, street cars, rolling stock, rail tracks and signaling.

But to a much more extensive type may include buildings, natural features, other vehicles, people, etc. Involvement in model trains can range from a possession of a single train set to hiking up to large amounts of money and countless hours of hard labor for its construction.

Aside from hobbyists, it can also serve as a prototype for proposed projects without incurring the cost of a life-sized prototype.

The most primitive form is the Carpet Railways. Its locomotives were easy and much uncomplicated. They are normally made out of brass. Plain oscillating cylinder-like material served as its wheels.

Explaining Model Railroad Structures »

One of the enjoyable and unique aspects of model railroading is the phase where you get to assemble the buildings and structures in the layout. Here you can actually create something – depending on your choice or the chosen railroad layout theme which might come easy or hard.

The easier ones are always those of pure fantasy. These layouts and design encompass just about anything on conjecture, with details not representing anything from the real world. Sometimes though, themes could get a bit particular in details.

Like for instance a fantasy layout but depicting a frozen or snowy landscape, or a train/ railway that goes over an Old American West.

Selective hobbyists, those who have experience and well-built understanding in the miniature concepts (particularly scale size and gauge) may want a more ambitious venture.

They could choose something really fancy, like the recreating the old Industrial Chicago – with model railroad structures having historical details, maybe having models of the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad perhaps or the Home Insurance Building.

Or even more out of the ordinary such as tracing James J. Hill’s Iron Horse Empire.

Model Railroad Scale »

Model Railroad ScaleWhen speaking of scale models, it means a replica of something that is generally smaller and in uncommon cases larger than the object being represented.

Scale models have represented just about everything, from globes to landmarks to statues to even actual city layout, whether historical or contemporary in nature. For small to large-scale models, we’ve seen representations of atoms, molecules, tissues or renditions of the DNA strand.

Its innate complexity, want for elaborate details and potential for keeps, scale modeling have become a major hobby to a large and diverse group.

It is not the degree of pursuit you find normally on stamp collecting or cigarette card collecting, though also a popular hobby on its own right. In scale modeling, preciseness is a virtue and this aspect is what enamored fans to the hobby.

Just like what we see in model railroading.

For the most popular scale-modeling hobby there is, model railroading is the foremost due to several factors. One is that model railroading provides enough details to keep everyone’s interest glued on for a long time.

Another is the already flourishing community of model railroaders that many official organizations and hobbyist groups have long standardized model railway scales worldwide.

How To Jump Start Your Model Railroad Scenery »

Landscaping, scenery building or “scenicking”, it is one of the pure and unique delights when railroad modeling. It’s creating the land/ terrain wherein the tracks and the train pass.

It is artistic not because you need to make it beautiful, but because of the challenge of model railroad scenery to make it as natural, as life like as possible in a 1:48 model, using synthetic materials.

This is the epitome of the enjoyment normally found of such designing and creating hobby experience.  However railroad modeling is harder, trickier, and requires more involvement.

That is because of several factors:

  • you buy your materials in real world currency,
  • you design and build what could be irreversible constructs,
  • imperfections to your design might impede in the actual mechanical operations of the train on the railroad,
  • and unlike sim games like SimCity (or more appropriately Railroad Tycoon),
  • there is no save/ reload function.

If you mess up bad, you may have to redo the entire endeavor. And you should know that the materials for model railroad scenery are really, really expensive.

Just like any other designing and building activity, you need to plan and plan and plan –even if your project doesn’t come larger than your welcome mat.
