The Tools Needed For Stamp Collectors!
Posted under MISC, Stamps on Apr 26, 2008
Collecting stamps does not necessarily require a substantial investment in terms of equipment. The tools of the trade used by most stamp collectors are relatively inexpensive and are quite easy to obtain.
Some hobbies require participants to spend a great deal for accessories and supporting devices and equipment, but the cost barrier to entry for stamp collecting is quite low by comparison.
Here is a look at some of the basic tools for stamp collectors:
Stamp collectors tool 1: Glassines
Glassines are envelopes in which stamps can be stored. Unlike regular paper envelopes, glassines are semi-transparent and are made of an acid free paper that will not deleteriously affect stamps over time.
Traditional white paper envelopes tend to be acidic and can have a corrosive effect of collectible stamps. Glassines are slightly more expensive than regular postage envelopes, but are still a cheap pickup. One need not empty their wallet in order to stock up on glassines.
Stamp collectors tool 2: Hinges
Hinges are small pieces of folded paper made of the same material used for glassines. They are usually rigged with a special adhesive that is designed to be used with stamps without risking damage to the collectibles.
Hinges are used to attach stamps to albums for display purposes. As one might expect, they are very inexpensive, often coming in at prices well below a penny per hinge. Despite their low cost, they are a necessity for anyone planning to mount stamps into a display book.
Stamp collectors tool 3: Tongs
Tongs are one of the most indispensable tools for the stamp collecting enthusiast. They look like regular household tweezers to the uninitiated, but are actually constructed in a manner that leads their pinching tips free of sharp edges.
Tongs are used whenever a stamp collector wants to handle or move part of his or her collection. They are an absolute must because human hands and fingers naturally emit oils and may host dirt or dust that can damage stamps.
Tongs are available at most any hobby store and can often be found at stamp shows, as well. They are small, inexpensive items. That tiny investment, however, may end up protecting a fortune.
Stamp collectors tool 4: Album
Although an album for the display of stamps is actually not a necessity, even most novice collectors will want a handy means by which they can organize and show their stamps. One need not purchase any particular type of album.
In fact, many new collectors begin with nothing more than a notebook and some acid-free paper. Others may want to investigate albums specifically designed with stamp collections in mind.
Regardless of the option pursued, both “official” stamp albums and “homemade” alternatives are quite affordable. A new collector does not need to spend more than a few dollars to acquire his or her first stamp album.
One of the nice things about stamp collecting is that it can be accessed without a large expenditure. Unlike hobbies that require a huge investment in accessories and equipment, stamp collecting requires only a few cheap items that are readily obtainable at negligible prices.
There are some items used by serious stamp collectors that can cost a bit more. Optional accessories range from magnifying glasses to museum-quality displays. One can spend a sizeable sum in support of their stamp collecting, but it is certainly not necessary.
If one has a cheap album, some hinges and a pair of tongs they can immediately begin creating an impressive display of their collection. Those stamps not destined for album display and they can stay in glassine envelopes. All of the basic equipment may be had for well under twenty five dollars, making stamp collecting a remarkably affordable pastime.
If you are considering stamp collecting as a pastime, one of the great attractions may be this low barrier for entry. One can start a collection with freely obtained and inexpensive stamps and a handful of cheap tools. There is no need for specialized instruction or a massive investment.
One need only have the desire to get started and access to some guidance about the finer points of this long-popular hobby. Even excellent resource materials can be found for low prices, making it possible to acquire all necessary tools and strong background guidance on the cheap.
