Braces Cleaning

Braces CleaningAt some point in life, majority of us have spent years with our teeth in braces, unless of course if you are naturally endowed with perfectly straight set of teeth.

Now if your kid is also in braces, you are more or less familiar with the common woes of a mouth loaded with wires, bracket and braces, you would naturally want to somehow give them an easier time.

Since braces are known to interfere with the normal chewing process that usually provide natural bathes and teeth cleaning   purposes, proper braces cleaning technique is quite important to keep it cavity free.

Although brackets and braces usually provide protection on the covered portion of your child’s teeth, the outside part encased with wires makes it difficult to clean.

More often than not, food particles are trapped that ultimately results to plaque buildup and a perfect breeding ground of cavity-causing bacteria. Gum diseases are also an all too real threat that can easily lead to swelling.

So if you want to save you child and yourself from such heart wrenching scenario, teaches your child proper braces cleaning methods.

So how often does one really need to brush if they have braces on? Top orthodontics advise braces cleaning and brushing teeth five minutes after meal or eating anything, even if it is just a light snack.

It would be best to have your child carry around a travel toothbrush in his/her backpack for more convenience. Here are other helpful tips in braces cleaning that you will definitely find useful in training your kid:

To start with, hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and begin with brushing between the wires and gum to effectively loosen some lodged food particles.

You can start at the outside part of the upper teeth, concentrating only 2-3 teeth as a time in a circular motion for at least ten strokes.

Then you can move on to brushing the inner surfaces using the same technique and eventually proceed to cleaning the chewing surfaces.

Repeat the process you used in your upper teeth to clean your lower teeth then thoroughly rinse your mouth and the toothbrush used. Use a mirror to check the teeth if there are any telltale signs of particles still left.

Aside from brushing, braces cleaning should also include regular flossing between the wires and under the brackets along with the use of mouthwash.

Generally, there is little difference between the normal brushing method and braces cleaning - although, if you have wires, you would naturally need to be more diligent and provide careful attention and increase your teeth-cleaning frequency.

This may mean a few persuasions for your child, but it is important to inculcate and train your child the proper way to brush their teeth. They will definitely be thankful for your concern a few years from now.
